Service Description

Introduction to Rat Sports – 5- Week Course The Introduction to Rat Sports Class is designed for both beginners and experienced dog-sport teams. Rat sports are an ideal entry point for handlers who are new to dog activities because they tap into dogs’ natural instincts and the lower levels are simple, fun, and confidence-building. Throughout the course, dogs will be introduced to the two main rat-sport organizations, each offering very different trial styles. Teams will gain exposure to both formats so you can explore which suits your dog best. Over Five Weeks We Will Cover: ⭐ Brief Introduction to Scent Theory How dogs use their noses, how scent moves, and why rat-based sports rely so strongly on instinct. ⭐ Rat Welfare, Handling, and Safety We take rat welfare extremely seriously. The rats used in training are well-socialized, professionally handled animals who are gradually and safely desensitized to the presence of dogs. Rats are accustomed to being gently handled, transported, and exposed to new environments. They are introduced to dog sounds and activity in a controlled, positive way so they remain calm and stress-free. Their time in any training session is limited for welfare, and they are rotated and monitored closely. During all exercises, the rat is safely contained inside a secure, ventilated, chew-proof tube designed specifically for rat sports. The tube prevents all physical contact between dog and rat. Rats have adequate air flow, bedding, and space. Dogs learn to search and indicate on the tube without ever being able to touch the rat. This setup ensures complete safety for both the rat and the dog. ⭐ Barn Hunt Foundations Overview of Barn Hunt trial classes and structure Basic handler mechanics and leash skills Introducing dogs to a rat in a rat tube Evaluating each dog’s natural indication style Helping dogs develop and refine their indication Introducing a distractor tube and teaching scent discrimination Simple confidence-building search runs Requirements All dogs must be up to date on Parvo, Distemper, and Rabies vaccines, and proof of vaccination is required prior to attending class.
