This is a six week class where your dog will learn to identify and find an antler! What is "Shed Dog"? Shed dog training is the process of teaching dogs to find and retrieve shed antlers, those discarded by deer, elk, and other antlered animals. This training utilizes a dog's natural retrieving instincts and scenting abilities, often building upon existing skills from bird or gun dog training. The goal is to develop a dog that can effectively locate and retrieve antlers, motivated by positive reinforcement and a strong bond with its handler. 1. Introduction and Shape Conditioning: Start by introducing the dog to the shape of an antler, often using a training dummy or a real antler with rounded edges for safety. Make it a positive experience, associating the antler shape with a reward, like retrieving it and receiving praise. Use a distinct command, separate from other retrieving activities, to identify shed hunting. 2. Scent Discrimination: Introduce the scent of antlers, often by applying antler scent to training dummies or starting with fresh sheds. Gradually transition to using real antlers, allowing the dog to develop scent discrimination and locate sheds based on smell. Consider using scent-elimination techniques to ensure the dog is truly learning to identify the antler scent, not just following the handler's scent. 3) Building a Strong Bond: Shed dog training is most effective when built on a positive, trusting relationship between the dog and handler. Positive reinforcement, such as praise and rewards, is crucial for keeping the dog engaged and motivated.
