The Great Rat Hunt: Junior Detective Agency An Intro to NASDA Urban Locating Date: May 17th Time: 9:00 AM – 10:15 AM Location: Orion Dog Training, San Jose, CA Ages for kids: 8–17 The Game is Afoot! Deep inside a stack of suitcases, hidden behind a city crate, or tucked away in a maze of boxes... there is a rat. Does your dog have what it takes to find it? Welcome to the Junior Detective Agency, where we turn your dog’s incredible sense of smell into a superpower. In this 75-minute workshop, you’ll step into the role of a Professional Handler. You’ll learn to trust your dog’s nose as you navigate "urban" obstacles to locate hidden quarry in this official intro to the sport of NASDA Urban Locating. Your Mission Briefing: Cracking the Code: Learn to read your dog’s "tells." Is that tail wag a distraction, or are they inches away from the find? The Big Reveal: Practice the thrill of the "Alert"—the moment you tell the judge your dog has successfully tracked down the hidden rat. Urban Maneuvers: Master the art of navigating your dog through tight spaces and tricky "city" environments. The Reward System: Perfect the high-value celebration that makes your dog want to hunt for you forever. Detective Gear List: A "High-Drive" Partner: Bring your dog (and their favorite leash—no retractable!). Secret Weapons: A pocket full of "jackpot" treats (the smelliest, tastiest stuff they love). Field Shoes: You’ll be on your feet exploring the course, so wear comfortable sneakers. Safety Report: Our quarry (rats) are the stars of the show! They are safely secured in bite-proof, ventilated containers. They are experienced "trainers" themselves and are never in harm's way. Accept the Mission Hurry—spaces are limited to ensure every Junior Detective gets maximum search time! *Juniors have to be accompanied by a legal guardian *Dogs need to be up to date on parvo, distemper and rabies vaccinations, please bring proof at the door, do NOT email it. *Dogs need to be neutral/ friendly with other dogs and people and well behaved on leash with the junior handler with supervision of the legal guardian. * Regular flat collar, harness or martingale allowed , NO prong, choke or electrical collars allowed. * Bring a variety of small training treats, at least three cups total! * Bring water and a bowl *Bring a mat or dog bed for your dog to settle on * Bring a chewy/hollow chew toy like a kong if they need help with settling.
